After the 2019 covid19 epidemic, that shut the world, and hit hard the tourism sector for
over two years; Rwanda development board introduces the discounted gorilla trekking
in the 2023/24 ending on 31 st December 2023. These special discounted permits are at
500$ for foreign residents, 200$ for nationals and east African residents, 15% discounts
for permits for family visits, 10 % discount for corporate entities that buy in bulk of over
30 trekking permits. Groups of over 100 international travelers get to benefit on the
discount of 500$ per gorilla trekking permit.
Gorilla permits are mandatory for all those intending to trek gorillas as it is a proof of
payment. It is issued to persons above the age of 15 years and meant for single use.
We advise one to book for the permit at least 6 months in advance as the activity is on
high demand and permits are limited. The normal gorilla trekking rate is 1500 $ per
person and non-refundable. The discounted gorilla trekking permits can be got through
a licensed tour operator, or directly from Rwanda Development Board.

Gorilla trekking leads to priceless memories. It is only done in the republic of Rwanda,
Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Gorillas are believed to be of the same
ancestry as man, as they share over 95% genes with man. Their daily routine is to
ravage on the plants, move in search for safe territories, and sleep. They are the most
powerful primates in the world, and live as family, led by a gentle silverback whose duty
is to offer leadership and safety to the entire family. Gorilla trekking is done on foot, with
the guidance of an expert ranger guide who knows the different corners of the park, the
life of gorillas and other facts.
The discounted gorilla trekking tours take place in Volcanoes national park (parc des
Vulcans). The rainforest is located in the north-eastern Rwanda in Musanze town. The
park seats at the foot of Virunga ranges, and in it are the five mountains; Mount
Gahinga, Mount Sabinyo, Mount Bisoke, mount Muhabura and Mount Karisimbi. It is the
most visited national park in Rwanda and one of the oldest in the African continent.
The safari highlight here is mountain gorillas and golden monkey trekking. The park
gates at kinigi open to visitors intending to trek any of the 13 gorilla families from 07:00
hrs. Only a maximum of 8 people is allowed to track the gorillas in their natural habitat
per day. During the pre-trekking briefing, the ranger guides explain the trekking dos and
don’ts, assign a gorilla group to trek and afterword’s accompany you to the jungle. This
is an activity that runs for almost the entire day; 1-8 hours depending on how far the
apes have moved. Upon locating them, you have an hour of watching how they feed,
move, play, mothers nursing their young ones, the pose of a silverback, and more.
